Alejandra Vallejo was born in Cordoba, Argentina. Her love for the
wood-craft begun 11 years ago, when she was searching for another
activity that would allow her to distract herself from her Law
studies. She begun studying carving in wood with Susana Grumber, her
first teacher, as a way to express her sensitivity into this art.
Susana not only taught her the basics in carving but also provided her
with the tools needed to discover the creative and imaginative person
she was. Later on, she continued developing these artistic abilities
that surprised many, since Alejandra is a gifted wood carver.
From the creative world of carving she discovers carpentry and then
the next level in her career, that was ebanistery.
Another person that was pivotal in her undeniable love for ebanistery
was Ariel. He was a very smart and creative artisan who taught
Alejandra all about precision in the wood-work. He showed her the
difference between a piece that is well or poorly done, standed in
just few millimeters from a cut piece of wood.
Later on, during her stay in Dijon, France, she discovered the
beautiful art of “marquetry”. Here she was able to apply all her
precision and skills learnt in past trainings. For Alejandra, this
technique was especially meticulous and challenging, but found herself
being patient and detailed to accomplish good work. She knew how
careful you have to be in order to build a unique art piece that comes
from many little pieces that are joined all together.
Today Alejandra lives in Toronto, ON, Canada. She works full-time at
the Masterpiece workshop owned and run by Paul and Sandra Szewc, in
Guelph, ON. It is there where she’s in constant creation of new
pieces.
